Was the Apostle John Deluded?

If evolution is true, then the Apostle John was either a liar or a lunatic.

John, the apostle, relates Jesus’ coming into the world in a unique, bold, manner. If we were to perform Christmas plays according to John’s account of Jesus’ appearance on Earth, they would look nothing like the angels, shepherds, manger, and the familiar nativity scene one might expect.

John says that the Word became flesh and dwelt among us. This Word, John makes clear, is Jesus. And John has many strange things to say about this Jesus. According to John, Jesus was not only the Word, whatever that means, but is also “with God” and “was God.”

In other words, John is announcing Emanuel, God with us.

But is John stating a fact that corresponds to reality?

If evolution is true, the answer is no. And more than no, if evolution is true John is spouting the delusions of a mad man. John is telling us that Jesus is God, and that he has made God known to us. By becoming a man.

And John relates this fact in the context of the difference between “natural descent” and being “born of God.” And, he says that those who believe Jesus is God come to earth can become born again as children of God.

But if evolution is true John’s statements cannot be true. If evolution is true the reality of the world demands that there is only natural descent for humans. Any talk of naturally descended humans being “born again” by a “God” to live in “grace and truth” is simply nonsense.

There is no Christmas truth if evolution is true. And if evolution is true the words of John are not true. If evolution is true then it is not true that God so loved the world that he gave his one and only son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

But maybe John is right. Maybe, as John further related: This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil.

What if Jesus really was the Light of the world? What if, as John said, this Light-Word person was with God in the beginning and through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.

If John is not a liar or a lunatic, the very creations God made in his image now love darkness and do not believe. They are, as John says, therefore condemned.

Surely, therefore, many hope that evolution is true.

Are you one of them? You had better be sure.

Think about it.
